When people think of Cambodia’s art scene, Battambang often comes to mind first. The city is well known for its creative community and open-air galleries, particularly around Street 2 and Street 2.5. But Phnom Penh has its own artistic side too, and you may be surprised by how much of it can be found around the city.
After a morning wet market tour with Urban Forage, we continued on to explore Phnom Penh’s street art and discovered an entire street filled with colorful murals tucked away in a lively local neighbourhood. It was one of those places we probably would never have found on our own.
The walls are covered with large paintings, colorful characters, portraits and creative designs, turning an otherwise ordinary street into something that feels like an open-air gallery.
Some of the artwork is bold and playful, while others tell stories through local faces, culture and everyday life.
And this isn’t the only place to find them. Phnom Penh’s murals and artwork can be found in unexpected corners throughout the city. You might spot a colourful wall while walking through a local neighbourhood, exploring a small alley or simply travelling between different parts of the city.
That’s part of what makes exploring Phnom Penh so interesting. Beyond the Royal Palace, riverside and other well-known attractions, there are plenty of creative and unexpected places waiting to be discovered.
